As a professional, and well versed makeup artist in special effects I am happy to share some exciting tips on electing the right, “special effects” makeup artist and makeup design in your area.

There are many things to consider when electing your makeup artist, and makeup design.

Lets start with budget, this will be the main factor in electing the artist as it can get a bit costly simply because of the product that is being used, along with the time it takes to create these amazing life like creatures.

All Special Effects Makeup Artist should be well trained in special effects, and skin care. The makeup used is pretty intense makeup that is applied to the skin, and the skin care knowledge will be necessary to help clients properly prep the skin for heavy makeup, and properly instructed on how to remove the special effects makeup. A makeup artist will also need well equipped  professional makeup kit, and professional makeup brush set to ensure high quality makeup applications.

A standard and very basic special effects application can range anywhere from $150 to $250 using smaller prosthetic pieces, and less invasive makeup techniques.

Larger and bigger makeup projects can start from $500 and go up depending the extent of the makeup application, and the production it is needed for.

This quote should be all inclusive of studio fees, makeup, and artist time. All artist work differently, and all makeup applications are different. Depending if your design is going to custom the prices can be subjected to change.

If your makeup design is something you’ve been thinking of for a while, and really want to make sure your design comes to life just the way you visualize it. A special effects, makeup trial is strongly recommended.

Trials are a separate fee, however they should be cheaper than the actual application but the sit time could be lengthier as you are creating the design together and discussing all the dislikes, and likes of the makeup. The makeup trial will really allow the client to experience the makeup application. Also, the trial allows the client to feel how comfortable the makeup feels on their skin.

Application Time:

Special Effects Makeup is pretty tedious and can take up to two hours, for a basic application.  The makeup artist has to study the clients skin, skin type, and the makeup design that has been requested. A lot of makeup clients aren’t aware of the time that is involved, and can run out of patience due to the sit time that is involved.

Makeup Tips: (before application)

Wear comfortable clothing, and a zip up, button up, or a top with a loose neck making it easy to remove without ruining the makeup application.

Drink plenty of water days before the application, this will help the skin stay hydrated.

If your skin is sensitive it’s best to bring your own moisturizers, and any other skin prep you may need. This way your skin isn’t shocked by any new products the artist may use.

Most of these concerns should be addressed at the time of your consult (phone consult).

Special Effects makeup can be a little uncomfortable to wear, and remove. Proper skin care preparation, and makeup removal instructions should always be included within your makeup fee.

Typically the client should have a mini exfoliation (prior to application) followed with a cream based cleanser, and a hydration mask. This will allow a smoother application, and an easier makeup removal.

One of my favorite products to use when removing makeup is, Precleanse by dermalogica.

01 precleanse

Precleanse is an excellent product for daily makeup removal, and other impurities that may be on your skin before the actual facial cleanse.

How to apply:

You’ll want to begin with clean hands, pour some of the precleanse on the the palm of your hands. This is best if you are over a sink to prevent spills in the rinse process. Massage precleanse all over face, over the makeup. The preclease will literally melt off the makeup. Once you feel makeup is pretty much lose and ready to be wiped off. Rinse, and repeat with an exfoliating or creamy cleanser to make sure makeup is completely removed. Lightly pat skin dry, keeping the skin slightly moist and applying a moisturizer appropriate for your skin type.

Ideally, you’d like to elect an artist that is also well versed in skin care.

Google artist in your area, look at their on line portfolios, read reviews, and request for a phone consult to make sure all of your answers are taken care of before the day of your makeup application.
